The right thing to do

“The members of the Republican National Committee strongly condemn the violence in and around the United States Capitol Building today in Washington D.C.. These violent scenes we have witnessed do not represent acts of patriotism, but an attack on our country and its founding principles. Our Founding Fathers established a nation of laws, not a nation of anarchy. We call for all those involved to listen to law enforcement officials and help restore order in our nation’s capital.”
Republican National Committee, January 7, 2021

“Representatives Cheney and Kinzinger are participating in a Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse…”
Republican National Committee, February 4, 2022

If it wasn’t obvious before, it should be with the censure today of Reps Cheney and Kinzinger: the Republicans have become a dangerous cult comprised of fascists, seditionists, and dingbats. Incredibly, they are more or less assured a takeover of the House and Senate in 2022 and probably a presidential win by Trump in 2024 to put the finishing touch on America’s slide into autocracy, regardless of what the Democrats do at this point.

Under these circumstances, what remains of legitimate federal law enforcement in America ought to pursue an investigation and prosecution of Trump, his family, and his coup-enablers, not because it will reverse America’s descent into fascism, but because it’s the right thing to do.
